Best Korean Sunscreen for Your Skin: How to Choose SPF and PA

A practical guide to choosing a Korean sunscreen: how to read SPF and PA, which filter type and texture suit your skin, how much to apply, and when daily SPF makes sense in the Nordics.

The best Korean sunscreen for you has SPF 50+ and PA++++ (or at least SPF 30 and PA+++) and comes in a texture you will happily apply every morning. Choose a light essence or gel for oily skin, a creamy formula for dry skin and a mineral or gentle formula for sensitive skin. Korean sunscreens are known for thin, comfortable textures that sit well under makeup, but the label and how much you apply matter more than the country.

What do SPF 50+ and PA++++ mean?

SPF is a lab test value for protection against UVB, the part of sunlight mainly behind sunburn. SPF 50 does not mean you can stay in the sun 50 times longer, and it only holds when you apply a generous layer. The European Commission recommendation on sunscreen labels groups SPF into low, medium, high and very high protection, with SPF 50+ as the top category.

PA is a grade for UVA protection used on many Asian labels, from PA+ to PA++++. More plus signs mean a higher UVA rating, and PA++++ is the top grade. PA is not a conversion of SPF: it answers a separate question. So SPF 50+ PA++++ simply means the highest rating on both scales. On products made for the EU, you may also see the letters UVA in a circle. It shows that UVA protection meets the EU recommendation of at least one third of the SPF.

On the label What it tells you What to look for
SPF 30, SPF 50+ UVB protection in a lab test SPF 30 or higher every day, SPF 50+ for long days outside
PA+++, PA++++ UVA grade used on Korean and Japanese labels PA+++ or PA++++
UVA in a circle EU sign that UVA protection is at least one third of the SPF Useful on products made for the EU
Water resistant Protection tested after time in water Still reapply after swimming and towel drying

Are Korean sunscreens actually better?

Not automatically. A Korean SPF 50+ is not stronger than a European SPF 50+ with the same rating. What Korean brands do well is texture: watery essences, gels, light creams and sticks that sink in, leave little or no white cast and are made to be worn every day under makeup. That matters, because a sunscreen you like is a sunscreen you actually use in the right amount.

The rules also differ by country. Korea, the EU and the US each keep their own list of allowed UV filters and their own test methods, so the same product can be labelled differently, or not sold at all, in another market. Read the label on the version you buy rather than a review written for another country.

Chemical, mineral or hybrid: which filter type suits you?

Sunscreens use two kinds of UV filters, and many Korean formulas mix them.

  • Chemical filters absorb UV light. They usually give the lightest, most invisible textures, such as sun essences and sun serums. Browse our chemical sunscreens.
  • Mineral filters are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Many people with sensitive or easily irritated skin prefer them. Older mineral formulas could look chalky; newer Korean ones are often made to blend in. Labels vary, so check the ingredient list: a mineral sunscreen uses only zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as UV filters. See our mineral sunscreens.
  • Hybrid formulas combine both, often to get a lighter feel with some mineral protection.

Neither type is right for everyone. If a sunscreen stings your eyes or leaves your skin feeling hot or tight, try the other type and check the ingredient list for fragrance and essential oils.

Which Korean sunscreen should I buy for my skin type?

Start with your skin type, then choose the texture and finish. Not sure of your skin type? Our skin quiz can help. This table gives the short version, with examples below.

Skin type or need Texture to look for Finish
Oily or combination Watery essence, gel or light fluid Fresh or semi-matte
Dry or dehydrated Creamy lotion with humectants such as hyaluronic acid Dewy and comfortable
Sensitive or prone to redness Mineral filters, few added scents Soft and natural
Uneven-looking tone, no-makeup days Tone-up cream Brightening, light tint
Top-ups during the day Stick or balm Depends on the formula

Oily or combination skin

Look for a thin essence or a light cream that does not feel heavy. Numbuzin No.1 Clear Filter Sun Essence 50ml is a chemical SPF50+ PA++++ sunscreen with a lightweight texture that absorbs quickly and leaves a refreshing finish; Numbuzin describes it as non-comedogenic and easy to remove with a foam cleanser. SUNGBOON EDITOR Green Tomato Pore Blurring Sun Cream SPF50+ 50ml gives SPF50+ PA++++ in a water-based, low-oil texture that the brand says blends in without caking or flaking.

Dry or dehydrated skin

Choose a creamy sunscreen that adds moisture, especially in winter when indoor heating dries the air. Abib Sedum Hyaluron Sunscreen Protection Tube SPF50+PA++++ 50ml has a creamy, moist texture with 10 types of hyaluronic acid and is made to wash off in the first cleanse. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics 50ml feels like a light moisturising cream, contains 30% rice extract and, the brand says, dries to a natural glow without a white cast.

Sensitive skin or skin prone to redness

Many people with reactive skin prefer mineral filters and fewer added scents. Dr.G Green Mild Up Sun SPF 50+/ PA++++ 50ml uses zinc oxide as its UV filter, and Dr.G says it glides on without stickiness and leaves a matte finish without a white cast. Blithe Airy Sunscreen 50ml is an ultra-light zinc oxide sunscreen with SPF50+ PA++++ that the brand says leaves no greasy residue; shake it well before use. Its ingredient list includes several essential oils, so patch test first if your skin is reactive.

Uneven-looking tone or a no-makeup look

Tone-up sunscreens add a soft brightening effect. Laneige Water Bank Blue Tone-Up Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++ 50ml uses blue tones to balance the look of redness; Laneige says it helps skin look brighter and more even right after you apply it, without looking unnaturally pale. Its ingredient list includes fragrance, so patch test first if your skin is reactive.

Top-ups during the day

A stick makes reapplying easy on the go. Cell Fusion C Aquatica Stick Sunscreen 100 SPF50+/PA++++ 19g has a light, soft texture with hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid and is aimed at dehydrated and sensitive skin. A stick lays down a thin layer, so go over each area a few times.

Is there a number one Korean sunscreen or brand?

No single sunscreen or brand is number one for everyone. Top 10 lists, star ratings and "most popular in Korea" rankings are usually based on sales or social media, and they change every season. Even one brand can make very different sunscreens: Cell Fusion C, for example, makes a hydrating stick, a toning sunscreen and other daily formulas, so compare the formula rather than the logo. A sunscreen loved for its glowy finish may feel greasy on oily skin, and a matte favourite may feel tight on dry skin. Use this checklist instead:

  1. SPF 30 or higher for everyday use, SPF 50+ for long days outside.
  2. PA+++ or PA++++, or the EU UVA logo.
  3. A texture that suits your skin type (see the table above).
  4. A finish you like: matte, natural, dewy or tone-up.
  5. No white cast on your skin tone. Mineral formulas vary most here.
  6. Easy removal. Some formulas, like the Abib and Numbuzin ones above, are made to come off easily; water-resistant formulas and sticks often need an oil cleanser first.

How much sunscreen should you use, and when should you reapply?

The amount matters as much as the number. SPF is tested with a thick layer, and the European Commission recommendation notes that using less lowers protection significantly. A simple routine:

  1. Finish your skincare first: cleanser, toner or serum, then moisturiser if you use one.
  2. Apply sunscreen as the last skincare step, in a generous, even layer over face, ears and neck. Cell Fusion C, for example, suggests about half a teaspoon for one application.
  3. Wait a few minutes before makeup so the layer can settle. Our guide to applying sunscreen over makeup covers top-ups later in the day.
  4. Reapply about every two hours when you are outside, and after swimming, sweating or towel drying.

Sunscreen is one part of sun protection. Shade, a hat, sunglasses and staying out of the strongest midday sun matter too, as both the American Academy of Dermatology and the FDA point out.

Do you need sunscreen every day in the Nordics?

From late autumn to late winter the sun sits low in the Nordic sky and UV levels are usually low, especially if you spend the short days indoors. That changes in spring. From around March or April the days lengthen quickly and UV rises, and daily SPF becomes a sensible habit until autumn. Check the UV index in your weather app: sun protection is generally advised once it reaches 3.

There are winter exceptions. Snow reflects sunlight, so a ski trip or a bright day in the mountains calls for SPF 50+ and a stick in your pocket for top-ups. In the cold months you may also prefer a creamier sunscreen, because frosty air outside and indoor heating can leave skin dry and tight.

FAQ

Is PA++++ better than SPF 50?

They measure different things, so one is not better than the other. SPF 50 describes protection against UVB and PA++++ describes protection against UVA. Look for both on the same product, for example SPF 50+ with PA++++.

What is the viral Korean sunscreen?

The Korean sunscreens that go viral online change often, and most are light chemical formulas with a glowy or invisible finish, such as rice or centella sun creams and essences. Popularity tells you about texture, not about your skin, so check the SPF, PA and texture against your skin type first.

Can I still buy Korean sunscreen in the USA?

Yes, but the choice is smaller. In the US, sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug and the list of allowed UV filters is different, so some Korean brands make sunscreens with a US OTC label, such as Cell Fusion C's OTC range. If you live outside Europe, contact us to check what we can ship to you.

Can a cushion foundation with SPF replace sunscreen?

Usually not on its own. The SPF on a cushion or foundation is measured with a thick layer, far more than most people pat on, so wear a sunscreen underneath and think of the cushion's SPF as a little extra protection. Our Korean cushion shade guide helps you pick the colour.

Does Korean sunscreen leave a white cast?

Chemical Korean sunscreens usually go on clear. Mineral ones can leave a slight white tint, especially on deeper skin tones, although many newer formulas are made to blend in. Tone-up creams are meant to brighten, so they look lighter on purpose.
