What Is Hanbang? Korean Herbal Skincare and Ingredients Explained

Hanbang skincare takes herbs from traditional Korean medicine, such as ginseng and mugwort, and puts them in modern formulas. This guide explains the term, the common ingredients and how to judge a product.

Hanbang refers to traditional Korean medicine, which includes herbal medicine. In skincare, brands use the word for modern cosmetics built around herbs and botanicals linked to that tradition, such as ginseng, mugwort, green tea and licorice. The heritage explains the idea. It does not prove what a finished serum or cream will do, so judge each product by its formula.

What does hanbang mean in skincare?

The Korea Tourism Organization's official guide describes traditional Korean medicine and hanbang treatments as including herbal medicine alongside other practices. In skincare retail the word is used more narrowly, for cosmetics that put herbs and botanicals associated with that heritage up front.

Keep the two meanings apart. A toner, serum or cream inspired by traditional medicine is still a cosmetic. It should be judged by its finished formula, its directions, its safety assessment and the support for its claims.

What are hanbang ingredients in skincare?

Hanbang-style products often lean on a familiar group of herbs. Packaging often uses common names, so check the full INCI list (the standard ingredient list on the pack) to see which plant and which part of it the formula uses. The examples below come from the product pages.

Herb or botanical Names to look for Example
Ginseng Panax ginseng root extract, seed oil or root water The Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum EX lists several ginseng extracts. In the Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil, ginseng seed oil adds a subtle grassy scent to a soybean oil base.
Mugwort Artemisia species, such as Artemisia princeps extract The Isntree Mugwort Calming Ampoule is built around 85% Injin mugwort extract.
Licorice Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root extract The same Isntree ampoule also lists licorice root extract.
Green tea Camellia sinensis ingredients The calming serum in the Beauty of Joseon Hanbang Serum Discovery Kit pairs green tea with panthenol.
Heartleaf Houttuynia cordata extract Often sold under the name heartleaf. Our centella, heartleaf and mugwort guide explains how to read these labels.

The European Commission's CosIng database helps with ingredient names, but it also warns that a listed INCI name is not regulatory approval or proof that an ingredient works.

How is hanbang skincare different from regular Western skincare?

In practice, mostly in the story and the ingredient palette, not in the format. Hanbang products are serums, essences, ampoules, creams and cleansers like any others, and Western brands use botanicals too. What sets the category apart is the cultural reference and the focus on herbs such as ginseng and mugwort.

So, is it just about the herbal ingredients? Mostly, yes, along with the cultural reference. The rest of the formula, including the base, fragrance and texture, matters as much as the featured herb.

Is hanbang skincare backed by science?

Some botanicals have published laboratory, clinical or review literature, but the evidence is uneven across ingredients and finished products. Studies use different extracts, concentrations and formulas, so a result for one extract does not carry over to every product that contains the same plant.

A published review of cosmeceuticals, linked in the sources below, gives context on how ingredients are studied. It cannot show that every ginseng, mugwort or licorice formula will firm, brighten, calm or absorb better. In the EU, cosmetic claims need support for the finished product, and Commission Regulation (EU) No 655/2013 sets the common criteria for that.

How do I choose a hanbang product?

  1. Pick the job in your routine first: hydration, a texture you enjoy or one supported cosmetic claim.
  2. Read the full ingredient list and the directions.
  3. Check fragrance and anything else you already know your skin reacts to.
  4. Add one product at a time, and stop if you notice a clear reaction.

If you would like to sample the style before buying a full size, the Beauty of Joseon Hanbang Serum Discovery Kit holds four 10ml mini serums that the brand calls hanbang serums. They are a green tea and panthenol calming serum, a propolis and niacinamide glow serum, a rice and alpha-arbutin serum and a ginseng and snail mucin serum. You can browse more in our serums, ampoules and essences.

If you already use several actives, our guide to ingredients not to mix shows which ones to keep apart.

When should I stop using a hanbang product?

Stop a product that causes persistent burning, swelling, blistering or a worsening rash. Severe or recurring reactions deserve professional assessment. Words like traditional, herbal or natural do not guarantee that a cosmetic will suit everyone, so a patch test is still a sensible first step.

FAQ

Is hanbang skincare the same as natural or clean skincare?

No. Hanbang describes a cultural and ingredient theme. Natural, clean and traditional are separate marketing words, and none of them guarantees tolerance, results or freedom from allergens.

Can hanbang skincare help with skin conditions?

A cosmetic cannot promise that. Hanbang products are for everyday skincare, and a skin condition needs proper assessment. A doctor or pharmacist can advise on a persistent concern.

Can I use hanbang skincare with retinol?

It depends on the finished formulas and your skin, not on the hanbang label. Some products already contain a retinoid: the Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum EX lists retinol next to its ginseng ingredients. Introduce one product at a time and follow the directions on each pack.

Does hanbang skincare suit sensitive skin?

No label can promise that. Check the full ingredient list for fragrance and anything you already react to, patch test, and start with a single product. A set of mini sizes is one low-commitment way to try a few formulas.
