PDRN is short for polydeoxyribonucleotide, a name for mixtures of DNA fragments. In skincare it shows up in serums, toners, creams and masks that aim for a more hydrated, smoother and visibly firmer look. Results depend on the whole formula, so treat PDRN as one ingredient on the label and not as a promise.
What does PDRN do in a skincare product?
A published review of PDRN extraction and cosmetic use describes the material as a mixture of DNA fragments. It also notes that much of the earlier research focused on medicinal uses. That tells you what PDRN is, but not what a finished serum or cream will do for your skin.
Brands position PDRN products around hydration, a smoother look and visible firmness. The Mediheal PDRN Lifting Serum 40ml page describes support for a visible lift, smoother texture and a radiant finish. The Anua PDRN 100 Hyaluronic Acid Booster Toner 250ml pairs PDRN with hyaluronic acid as a hydrating first step after cleansing. Those are descriptions of whole products, not proof that PDRN alone causes the result.
Is a PDRN serum the same as a clinic treatment?
No. An injection, a procedure-assisted application and a leave-on cosmetic differ in formulation, dose, delivery and study design. Results from one route should not be treated as proof for another.
For a cosmetic sold in the EU, claim wording has to meet common criteria under Commission Regulation (EU) No 655/2013, and an ingredient's properties must not be presented as the finished product's properties without support. Hydration or a smoother-feeling surface can be a cosmetic claim when it is supported for that product. Claims about medical effects or guaranteed collagen production need a different evidence and regulatory basis, and an at-home cosmetic is not a substitute for a medical procedure.
How do I read a PDRN product label?
- Confirm the product is a topical cosmetic and read its directions.
- Find PDRN on the full ingredient list. It can appear as Sodium DNA, as in the lists for the zipiel Cica PDRN Shield Lifting Film Serum 30ml and the VT Cosmetics PDRN Essence Stick Balm 9.5g.
- Check where the PDRN comes from. Some products describe salmon-derived PDRN, others vegan or plant-based PDRN. The VT balm names vegan PDRN from Korean wild ginseng extract, and the PO:DL Rice PDRN 4X Watery Sun Serum 50ml names rice PDRN.
- Identify the exact claim on the pack, and check whether any study it cites used the same route and the same finished formula.
- Try one new formula at a time, so you know what caused any change.
Which PDRN products can I compare?
- Toner: the Anua booster toner above, a watery 250 ml bottle for the first leave-on step after cleansing.
- Serum: the Mediheal PDRN Lifting Serum, used as one to two pumps after cleansing and toning, followed by moisturizer. The zipiel serum forms a thin, elastic film and is smoothed on from the center of the face outward.
- Cream: the Mediheal PDRN Derma Cream 50ml, which pairs a PDRN complex with ceramide, squalane, hyaluronic acid and panthenol and goes on after cleansing and toning.
- On the go: the VT Cosmetics balm, a pocket-sized stick for touch-ups.
More choices sit in the serum, essence and ampoule collections. If you plan to combine PDRN with other actives, read which skincare ingredients not to mix first.

FAQ
Does PDRN skincare have side effects?
A leave-on PDRN product carries the same practical risk as any new product: irritation or an allergic reaction to something in the formula, such as fragrance or other actives. Patch test first, add one product at a time, and check the label if you avoid fish-derived ingredients. Stop if a reaction persists and ask a doctor or pharmacist.
Can PDRN reduce wrinkles?
A cosmetic can only claim visible, appearance-level effects. Some PDRN products are described as cushioning the look of fine lines or supporting a firmer look, but results vary from person to person and depend on the whole formula. A cream is not a replacement for medical care.
Is PDRN good for dry or sensitive skin?
The name PDRN does not tell you whether a formula suits dry or sensitive skin. Look at the rest of the label: hyaluronic acid, ceramide and panthenol point to a hydrating base, while fragrance or strong actives may not suit reactive skin. In cold Nordic winters, pair any serum with a moisturizer you already tolerate.
When do I use PDRN in my routine?
Follow the directions on the product. A booster toner goes on right after cleansing, a serum after cleansing and toning, and a PDRN cream can be the moisturizer step on top. In the morning, sunscreen goes last.
