How to Read Korean Skincare Expiry Dates and PAO Symbols

An expiry date, a manufacturing date, a batch code and an open-jar PAO symbol answer different questions. Here is how to tell them apart and what to do when a code is unclear.

To read the expiry date on Korean skincare, first work out which mark you are looking at. Packaging can show four things that look alike: a minimum-durability or expiry date, a manufacturing date, a batch code and an open-jar PAO symbol, and each answers a different question. A batch code is not an expiry date, and a manufacturing date alone does not tell you when a product expires.

How do I read the expiry date on Korean skincare?

Start by identifying which kind of mark the pack uses. This table separates the four signals people most often mix up.

Signal What it tells you What it does not tell you
Minimum-durability or use-by date How long the unopened product is expected to stay suitable under the stated storage conditions How long it lasts once opened
Manufacturing date When the unit was made The expiry date, unless the brand states a shelf life
Batch or lot code A production identifier used for traceability, in a format chosen by each manufacturer A date of any kind
PAO open-jar symbol A period after opening, such as 12M for 12 months, next to an open-jar icon When the product was made or when it expires unopened

The EU cosmetics regulation defines the packaging symbols for PAO and minimum durability. The FDA notes that U.S. law does not generally require expiration dates on cosmetic labels, so what you see depends partly on the market a product was made for.

What does the PAO symbol mean?

PAO stands for period after opening. It is an open-jar icon followed by a number and the letter M, such as 12M, showing how many months after opening the product is meant to be used. Count from the day you first open it, not from the manufacturing date.

Under the EU regulation, a product with a minimum durability of 30 months or less carries a date of minimum durability, shown as a date with an hourglass symbol or an introductory phrase. A product that lasts longer than 30 months shows a PAO instead. Some products show both.

Is the manufacturing date the same as the expiry date?

No. A manufacturing date only tells you when the unit was made. A brand may state the shelf life separately, for example as a number of months counted from the manufacturing date. If the pack does not say, the date alone cannot give you an expiry date.

What is a batch code and where do I find it?

A batch or lot code identifies a production run so that a brand can trace it. Because each manufacturer chooses its own format, a string of letters and numbers is not a date unless the brand says so. Look on the container and on the outer carton, as the two can carry different marks.

Is there a standard Korean expiry date format?

There is no single format you can safely assume. Dates can be written year first, day first or month first, with dots, slashes or no separators at all. EU labelling rules put the date in the order day, month and year, or month and year, but packaging made for other markets may not follow that order.

If the code is unclear, take these steps:

  • Look for words or symbols around the code, such as an open jar or an hourglass.
  • Check both the container and the outer carton.
  • Do not reverse digits or assume a year-and-month pattern unless the manufacturer confirms it.
  • Photograph the package and ask the brand or retailer to decode that exact batch.

A product page cannot tell you the date printed on your own unit, and third-party batch-code calculators are not the manufacturer. If you bought from Keauty, our contact page is the place to start.

How long can I use skincare after I open it?

Follow the PAO symbol if there is one, and write the opening date on the pack or in a note. This works for any product you open and use over months, such as a cleanser like the ROUNDLAB 1025 Dokdo Cleanser, a serum like the Torriden DIVE IN Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Serum or a cream like the illiyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream.

Store the product as directed, close it after use and keep fingers and applicators clean. If the label asks for a cool, dry place, a spot away from radiators and direct sunlight is a sensible choice in a Nordic winter.

Stop using a product that develops an unusual smell, color, texture or separation, shows signs of contamination or causes an unexpected skin reaction, even if the date has not passed. If a reaction keeps coming back, our guide to signs your skincare routine does not suit you covers what else to check. FAQ

Do Korean cosmetics have an expiry date?

Many products show a date, a PAO symbol or both, but practice differs between brands and markets. The FDA notes that U.S. law does not generally require expiration dates on cosmetic labels, while the EU regulation sets rules for minimum durability and PAO symbols. If you cannot find one, ask the brand or retailer about that exact product.

Can I use skincare after the expiry date?

A date is a guide, not a guarantee in either direction. If a product is past its date, or its smell, color or texture has changed, replace it. If you notice irritation, stop using it and ask a pharmacist or doctor if it does not settle.

Does skincare expire if I never open it?

A minimum-durability date applies to an unopened product stored under the stated conditions, so keep it as directed. After you open it, the PAO symbol, if there is one, is your guide.

Can I use a batch code checker website?

Third-party calculators are not the manufacturer, and batch code formats differ between brands, so a result can be wrong. If you need the date, the brand or retailer is the one who can read the code for your batch.
