Apply sunscreen before makeup, as the last step of your skincare. To reapply over makeup during the day, follow the label and rebuild an even layer over all exposed skin, then repair only the makeup that moved. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises reapplying every two hours outdoors and after water, sweating or toweling. Powder or a quick pass over the T-zone does not count as a full application.
Do I put sunscreen on before or after makeup?
Before. Sunscreen is the last step of your skincare, and makeup goes on top. The AAD advises a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, applied to exposed skin as the directions say. Let it settle, then apply makeup without rubbing the layer away.

How do I reapply sunscreen over makeup without ruining it?
- Check your exposure. Outdoors, reapply every two hours and after water, sweating or toweling. Indoors, exposure varies, so go by the label and the time you actually spend in daylight.
- Blot, do not scrub. Press off excess oil instead of rubbing.
- Apply in sections. Cover the forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and any other exposed area, using enough to follow the directions.
- Let it settle. Give the layer a moment before you touch your face again.
- Repair only what moved. Press concealer or cushion back where it slipped, instead of redoing the whole face.
Pressing may disturb less makeup than rubbing, but no technique makes too little product equal to the labeled amount. For a long day outdoors, it can be more reliable to step away and rebuild the layer than to rely on several tiny touches.
Which sunscreen formats are easiest to reapply over makeup?
A stick, cushion or light lotion can be convenient, but only if you can apply it evenly and as directed. These examples come from Keauty's product pages.

Its directions call for 4 passes back and forth over each section of the face, with reapplication every two hours or after swimming or sweating. The haruharuwonder Black Bamboo Daily Soothing Sun Shield is described as a powdery balm with a semi-matte finish that does not drag on the skincare or makeup underneath. The Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Silky Fit Sun Stick is a roll-on stick that its product page says passed sweat-proof tests.
- Cushions. The Laundryou Moisture Sun Cushion Clear is a mineral SPF50+ PA++++ cushion with minimal white cast, according to its product page, which lists people who want to reapply sunscreen even after makeup among its target users. The d'Alba Waterfull Fresh Sun Cushion is SPF50+ PA++++, and its directions say to apply it frequently while carrying it and to close the inner cap so it does not dry out.
- Lotions. The Missha All Around Safe Block Soft Finish Sun Milk is SPF50+ PA+++, and its product page says skin stays comfortable even after reapplying several times. Its directions give a pea-sized amount for the face and say to reapply often in prolonged sun.
Brand directions differ. Dr.Jart+ says every two hours, while the Skin1004 stick says every 2 to 3 hours. Follow the label of the product in your hand. Outdoors, the two-hour interval from AAD guidance is a sensible default.
Does SPF in foundation or a cushion replace sunscreen?
No. Makeup does not cancel the need to reapply sunscreen outdoors. An SPF number on a cushion is a product claim under test conditions, and a thin layer of base makeup is not the same as a full sunscreen application. In the EU, sunscreen claims follow common criteria and need evidence behind them. That covers what the pack says, not how much product ends up on your face.

How often should I reapply in a Nordic winter and summer?
The two-hour AAD interval is for time spent outdoors, in any season. Winter sun in the Nordics is low, so how often you top up depends on how long you are really outside. From spring into summer, make daily SPF a habit and reapply by your time outdoors, not by the date on the calendar.
What else protects my skin besides sunscreen?
Sunscreen is one part of sun protection. Seek shade and wear protective clothing, and follow every product-specific warning and water-resistance direction. Avoid inhaling sprays, and stop using any product that irritates your skin.

Can you get sun through makeup?
Makeup is not a substitute for sunscreen, so do not count on it alone to protect your skin. Keep a proper sunscreen layer underneath and reapply it as directed, as described above.
What SPF should I wear under makeup?
