Retinol and Retinal

Build your box: shipping drops at $29, free from $59

A retinol serum or cream uses retinol, a form of vitamin A, to help skin look smoother and more even over time. Retinal is a related form that some Korean brands use. Many Korean formulas start at a gentle strength and pair retinol with soothing ingredients such as centella or ceramides.

This collection includes retinol and retinal serums, creams, ampoules and eye care from Beauty of Joseon, COSRX, Mary&May, P.CALM and VT Cosmetics. Start two or three evenings a week, patch test first, follow with moisturizer and wear sunscreen every morning while you use it. Choose a gentle formula if you are new to retinol, and skip it on irritated skin.

To combine retinol with other actives, read our niacinamide, vitamin C and retinol serum guide.
