The best Korean eye cream for you depends on what bothers you most. For dark circles, look for brightening ingredients such as niacinamide, vitamin C or tranexamic acid. For morning puffiness, try a cooling applicator or caffeine eye patches. For fine lines, choose peptides, a retinoid (retinal or retinol) or bakuchiol, and for dryness, ceramides and hyaluronic acid. An eye cream can help the area look smoother and fresher, but it cannot remove dark circles, wrinkles or bags.

What does an eye cream actually do?

The skin around your eyes is thinner than on the rest of your face and has fewer oil glands, so it dries out faster and shows fine lines sooner. An eye cream is a moisturizer made for that area: often gentler, sometimes richer, and made to be used close to the eyes.

Realistic results look like this: dry, crepey skin looks smoother once it is well moisturized, dark circles look less noticeable when skin tone is more even, and morning puffiness looks less obvious after cooling. Shadows that come from the shape of your face do not change with a cream, whatever the label says.

How do I choose a Korean under-eye cream for my concern?

Pick your main concern first, then match the ingredients and format. Not sure what your skin needs overall? Try the Keauty skin quiz.

Main concern Look for Helpful format
Dark circles, dull-looking tone Niacinamide, vitamin C, tranexamic acid, glutathione, arbutin Light cream, morning and night
Puffiness, tired-looking eyes Caffeine, a cooling feel Hydrogel patches, a chilled applicator
Fine lines, loss of firmness Peptides, retinal, retinol, bakuchiol, ginseng Richer cream, often at night
Dryness, flaking Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, shea butter Cream or balm
Sensitive, easily irritated eye area Short ingredient list, no fragrance or essential oils Light cream or serum

The examples below come from Keauty's Korean eye cream collection.

Dark circles and dull-looking under-eyes

Mary&May's Tranexamic Acid+Glutathione Eye Cream 30g contains 1,000 ppm tranexamic acid and 1,000 ppm glutathione, plus niacinamide and vitamin C. The brand made it for dark circles and a dull-looking tone around the eyes, for use morning and evening. Its ingredient list includes fragrance.

COSRX's Advanced Snail Peptide Eye Cream 25ml is a light, fast-absorbing cream with 72% snail secretion filtrate, five types of peptides and niacinamide, in an airless pump. COSRX says it helps the eye area look brighter by diminishing the appearance of dark circles and puffiness.

Puffiness and tired-looking eyes

Medicube's PDRN Pink Caffeine Collagen Eye Patch 60pcs are hydrogel patches with caffeine, PDRN (sodium DNA), several forms of collagen and retinol. The brand says the caffeine helps visibly reduce the look of puffiness. Place them with the spatula, leave them on for 10 minutes, then massage in the leftover serum. Medicube suggests a patch test behind the ear first. Our guide to PDRN skincare explains the ingredient.

If you prefer a cream, Dr. Ceuracle's Royal Vita Propolis 33 Capsule Eye Cream 20ml has a light, serum-like texture with collagen capsules carrying vitamin C, plus propolis and royal jelly extracts. It comes with a golden massager that the brand suggests keeping in the fridge for a cooling feel. Skip it if you react to bee products.

Fine lines and firmness

SKIN1004's Madagascar Centella Probio-cica Bakuchiol Eye Cream 20ml is a rich cream that absorbs quickly, with bakuchiol (5,000 ppm), which the brand calls a plant-based retinol, plus fermented centella, ceramide NP and hyaluronic acid. A silicone applicator helps you massage it in from the inner to the outer corner. Its ingredient list includes no fragrance.

Sulwhasoo's Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Eye Cream 15ml pairs a concentrated ginseng saponin complex with a ginseng flower and retinol complex. Its applicator has a cooling tip the brand suggests pressing on the corners of the eye and across the eyelid. Ginseng is a classic ingredient in hanbang, Korean herbal skincare; our hanbang guide explains the tradition. For more options, see the anti-aging and firming collections.

Sensitive or easily irritated eye area

Goodal's Green Tangerine Vitamin C Eye Cream 30ml is described by the brand as a gentle formula for sensitive skin around the eyes. It combines tangerine extract with vitamin C derivatives, niacinamide and arbutin, and its ingredient list includes no fragrance. Goodal suggests applying it under the eye, around the orbital bone and on the eyelid, morning and night.

AXIS-Y's Vegan Collagen Eye Serum 10ml is a light, melting serum with vegan collagen, five peptides and three forms of hyaluronic acid, applied with a roller tip. Its ingredient list includes no fragrance either. Even so, patch test any new eye product first.

Which Korean eye cream helps with fine lines and wrinkles?

Look for peptides, a retinoid or bakuchiol, and enough moisture, since dryness makes lines look deeper. Retinoids (retinal and retinol) are the most likely of these to irritate, so they need the most care near the eyes:

  • Start two or three evenings a week and build up only if your skin stays calm.
  • Apply to dry skin, on the orbital bone, not on the lash line.
  • Use sunscreen every morning while a retinoid is in your routine.
  • If your skin is sensitive, try bakuchiol or a peptide cream first.

SOME BY MI's Retinol Intense Advanced Triple Action Eye Cream 30ml lists 0.1% retinol plus retinal; the brand suggests morning and evening use, so wear sunscreen by day. It also contains fragrance and tea tree leaf extract. For a peptide cream without a retinoid, Pyunkang Yul's Black Tea Time Reverse Eye Cream 9ml combines fermented black tea with copper tripeptide-1 and acetyl hexapeptide-8. If retinoids tend to irritate you, our guide to the retinol sandwich method explains how to sandwich retinol between two layers of moisturizer.

Does Beauty of Joseon eye cream actually work?

In Keauty's range, Beauty of Joseon makes an eye serum rather than an eye cream: the Revive Eye Serum: Ginseng + Retinal 30ml. Ginseng root extract is the second ingredient, and the brand adds 2% liposome-stabilized retinal, which it says equals 0.02% active retinal, along with niacinamide, adenosine and ceramide NP. Its ingredient list includes no fragrance.

Whether it works for you depends on what you expect. It is a cosmetic aimed at the look of fine lines, so think smoother, better-hydrated skin over weeks of regular use, not a lift. Because retinal is a form of vitamin A, start a few evenings a week and wear sunscreen by day. The brand also makes a Revive Under Eye Patch: Ginseng + Retinal 60ea, with 60 patches, or 30 pairs.

Is there a most popular or highest rated Korean eye cream?

No single eye cream holds that title. Rankings and ratings differ by shop and source and change often, so they say little about your skin. Korean eye care tends to fall into a few styles: ginseng and herbal creams, peptide creams, retinoid or bakuchiol creams, snail and centella creams, and hydrogel eye patches. All of these styles are in Keauty's range, and the table above helps you pick the one that fits your concern.

What do Koreans use under their eyes?

Many Korean routines give the eye area its own step: an eye cream or eye serum, with under-eye patches as an occasional extra. Patches hold a serum against the skin for a set time:

  • Hydrogel patches feel cool and stay put. Pyunkang Yul's Black Tea Time Reverse Eye Patch 84g/60ea are clear hydrogel patches with fermented black tea, niacinamide, adenosine, hyaluronic acid and ceramide NP. Leave them on for 20 to 30 minutes, then tap in what is left.
  • Melting patches dissolve on damp skin. Sungboon Editor's Deep Collagen Melting Patch 6pcs is a dry collagen film that melts and leaves a mesh backing; the brand suggests one to three times a week.

Some patches contain essential oils, such as lavender or bergamot oil, so check the ingredient list if your eyes are sensitive. Browse all Korean eye patches.

How do you apply eye cream correctly?

  1. Cleanse, then apply toner and serum.
  2. Take a small amount, no more than a pea-sized dab.
  3. Dot it along the orbital bone with your ring finger, the finger that presses most lightly.
  4. Tap or massage gently from the inner to the outer corner until it is absorbed. Do not rub or pull.
  5. Follow with moisturizer, and in the morning, sunscreen.

Most brands put eye cream after serum and before moisturizer, but some, such as Pyunkang Yul and ISOI, make it the last step. Follow the product's directions.

How should you care for your eyes in a Nordic winter?

Cold wind outside and heated, dry air indoors take moisture from the thin skin around the eyes. In winter, a richer cream at night and a hydrating patch now and then can keep the area comfortable. For dry, flaky skin around the eyes, the SKIN1004 eye cream above also lists shea butter alongside ceramide NP and hyaluronic acid. On dark winter mornings, a cool hydrogel patch while you get ready can help tired-looking eyes look fresher.

The winter sun is low, but from spring, take sunscreen up to the orbital bone every morning and wear sunglasses in bright light, especially if you use a retinoid or vitamin C.

FAQ

Do I really need an eye cream?

Not always. If your face moisturizer feels comfortable around your eyes and does not sting, it can do the job. An eye cream earns its place when you want ingredients aimed at one concern, a texture made for thin skin, or an applicator.

Can I use eye cream on the rest of my face?

Yes, if the directions allow it. Beauty of Joseon says its Revive Eye Serum can go on the whole face, and Pyunkang Yul suggests its Black Tea eye cream for smile lines, forehead and neck. A small tube or jar runs out fast, though.

Can an eye cream get rid of under-eye bags?

No. Cooling and caffeine patches can make morning puffiness look less obvious for a while, but bags that stay all day usually come from the structure of the eye area, which a cream cannot change. If swelling appears suddenly, itches or hurts, ask a doctor or pharmacist.

At what age should I start using eye cream?

There is no set age. Start when you notice dryness or fine lines, or when you want a gentler product near your eyes. COSRX, for example, aims its snail peptide eye cream at people in their 20s and 30s.

Can I put eye cream on my eyelids?

Only if the product says so. Goodal's directions for its Green Tangerine eye cream include the eyelid, while most brands say to stay on the orbital bone and avoid direct contact with the eyes.
